Designing a Custom Home for Multigenerational Living

December 20, 2017

One of the most popular design requests we’ve received this year is designing a custom home for multigenerational living. In fact, many customers are choosing to build a custom home based largely on a need for a better alternative for multigenerational design than what is commonly available. The truth is that designing a custom home for multigenerational living does not have a cookie cutter solution. Everyone has different needs. Here are a few creative solutions for designing a home for multigenerational living that maximizes freedom, privacy and independence.

Two First Floor Master Suites

Traditional multigenerational design can include a master suite on the main floor and another upstairs. The idea is that the first floor master can be easier to navigate and more accessible for older family members. This means that the owners often choose the upstairs suite. However, dual master suites on the first floor can provide privacy and convenience for other members of the household too. A split design, which places the two master suites at opposite ends of the first floor with main living areas and kitchen in the middle, can be a smart solution for privacy and accessibility.

Separate Mother-in-Law Suite

Another solution to multigenerational living is a mother-in-law suite that is located in a separate building from the main home. This gives family members (or guests) more privacy without giving up accessibility. This can be a great alternative for an older family member who wants to garden or just prefers the added solitude. You can even create a separate building with a mother-in-law quarter on the first floor and an office, workshop or art studio upstairs.

Independent Living

Take the idea of a separate building one step further and create a sense of independent living with a mother-in-law suite that includes a full kitchen and living area in addition to a bedroom and bath. Create a sense of freedom and independence that’s just a stone’s throw away. How do you envision the perfect home for multigenerational living?
