Custom Home Design Ideas: Fireplaces

Custom home design ideas with fireplaces

Brrr… The chill of winter is in full swing in the Pacific Northwest, and for many of us that means evenings curled up in front of the fireplace. In fact, fireplaces are often one of the “must have” features that our customers request when they come to us to design their dream home. Fireplaces make a home feel like, well, home. But they also provide a high impact visual for any room.

Here are some tips for including a fireplace in your new home design. To inspire your own ideas of what is possible, we’ve included photos of homes that we’ve recently completed for Estes Builders customers.

A Focal Point for Open Living Spaces

A fireplace can be the perfect way to create a beautiful division between living and dining areas, like this one in a home we recently completed in Silverdale, WA. The stone exterior with raised hearth brings the feel of the outdoors in and creates a strong focal point from all open living areas. An elevated mantle creates visual interest and a place for family photos, heirlooms, or favorite art objects.

A Stunning Design Element for Smaller Spaces

Not every fireplace has to be a large focal point to have an impact. This modern gas fireplace, included in a custom home we recently completed in Sequim, WA, has a clean look that doesn’t take up a lot of space. Smaller fireplaces like this one are an ideal choice to turn an average master suite into something that feels like you never want to leave. Design your master suite with a fireplace like this one that can be enjoyed from the bedroom or while soaking in a hot bubble bath. A fireplace can also be used to separate the master suite from a sitting area for a cozy place to curl up with a good book and a glass of your favorite vintage.

One Fireplace, Two Separate Rooms

Two-sided fireplaces are not just for open living areas. A fireplace can serve as a dramatic focal point for the main living area, like this one in a custom home we recently completed in Port Townsend, WA, and also be enjoyed from a completely separate room such as a master suite, den, or music room. This is a beautiful and efficient way to add the warmth and coziness of a fireplace to more rooms in the home without adding more line items to the budget.
