Design for Aging in Place
Nell Clausen, custom home sales representative for Estes Builders recently completed training on Universal Design and Meeting the Needs of an Aging Population. ‘There are approximately 35 million baby boomers who are looking to retire in the near future, said Nell, so if they are looking to build a custom home, it’s important for our company to be aware of products and design trends that we can recommend that will allow them to age in place.’
This training helped identify important lifestyle questions that we now ask our clients to consider before we begin the design of their custom home. Some examples include whether they would prefer a flush entry for their shower entrance, touchless faucets, grab bars in the bathroom and wider hallways. Often, people don’t consider these questions even though according to AARP, 80% of people surveyed who have recently retired said they would prefer to grow old in their own home if possible.
