Do a search of “home design trends for 2019” and you’re likely to see a lot of opinions and buzzwords (we got a kick out of “maximalism”). But design trends matter. After all, if design trends never changed we’d all still have avocado green kitchens and shag carpet, right?
Here are a few design trends that are new (or still “in”) to consider for your dream home.
A Pop of Color
According to Elle Decor’s list of design trends that will be in (and out) in 2019 bold, patterned backsplashes are still very much in. A bold backsplash can add a sophisticated design element to any kitchen while leaving more of your budget for gourmet kitchen essentials like a Wolf Range or custom cabinets.
A classic, white farmhouse kitchen is timeless but the trend may be shifting to darker kitchens. According to recent article on Living, Etc searches for “navy blue kitchens” are up 93% in the last six months. A high contrast kitchen that pairs clean, white counters with blue or black cabinets gives this classic design a fresh and contemporary new look.
As part of a greater movement toward bathrooms that are safer and more comfortable for aging Baby Boomers (and everyone, for that matter), curbless showers are hot, according to the latest Houzz Bathroom Trends Survey. Homeowners are also adding features like shower benches, grab bars, and non-slip floors.
Kitchen Islands… Out?
The kitchen island has become a must for many homeowners who want additional counter space and storage, but according to Realtor.com’s list of “8 Interior Design Trends That Are So Over in 2019” the trend is toward more flexibility and open space. This means moveable islands that can provide added space and storage for prep but can also be moved to the side when it’s time to gather friends and family. We’re not convinced on this one because a well-designed kitchen island has so much to offer and often times is the gathering place for family and friends.
