A View From Every Room

A complicated property with a beautiful view can’t be wasted; it just takes some creative problem solving. That was the case with Estes Builders 550th home recently completed in the Bell Hill neighborhood of Sequim. Perched on a hill, the lot offers sweeping views to the north but is extremely steep from east to west. Estes Builders’ team designed the foundation across the width of the parcel, stair-stepping up the slope while keeping the home on one level. Though a more expensive solution than laying out the design in a north-south configuration, it was worth it for the homeowners: Every major living space—from the great room to the kitchen to the bedrooms to even the primary bathroom shower—has views of Sequim Bay, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Mount Baker.

Wood and Stone Create a Northwest Feel

The Bell Hill home’s outdoor space is as much in tune with its surroundings as the floor plan. A large deck sits high off the living room and kitchen and includes an outdoor kitchen with grill station. Stairs lead down to a terraced sitting area and fire pit. The primary bedroom also has an adjoining balcony.

Relocating from Florida, the homeowners conducted many of their meetings with Estes via Zoom, with occasional in-person visits. The Northwest-style design of the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home plays into the couple’s love of cedar, with exposed beams inside and out along with a corresponding neutral color palette. Gray stacked stone and cable railings on the deck add a modern vibe against the warmer wood.

Inside, a lighter gray stone fireplace surround complements the soft wood accents, darker kitchen cabinets, rustic barn doors, and white shiplap walls. The primary bathroom features a large modern shower entirely in marble, with a built-in, full-width bench, niches, and three showerhead options.

The client’s wish list included accommodations for their beloved dog, including a locking gate on the deck and a tiled dog wash in the sizable, well-appointed laundry room. The large foundation provides ample space for mechanicals and storage.
