More About Us

Space for All

How do you accommodate multi-generational living and important hobbies in a home that’s all on one floor? By buying a great piece of property and working with a custom builder that excels at design. That was the case for this home on a hill in Keyport, where the homeowners wanted space for the wife’s mother as well as both ladies’ art studios. Estes Builders designed a 4,900-square-foot ranch house that spanned 169 feet from end to end, including an attached mother-in-law apartment and views of the Hood Canal to the west and Mount Rainier to the southeast.

Coastal Vibes and Custom Touches

The sprawling ranch was thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of the occupants without feeling overwrought. On the exterior, soft yellow board-and-batten and shingle siding, a Caribbean-blue door, and simple trim offer a nod to the homeowners’ previous locale, Houston. Two round windows at the entryway also contribute to a coastal vibe, with custom tile around the interior openings for an eye-catching look. Inside, beachy blues, yellows, and corals on the walls and glass fireplace surrounds continue the aesthetic.

The 815-square-foot mother-in-law apartment branches out from the right of the house’s main core and includes a large kitchen with stainless steel appliances, an en suite bathroom with dual vanities, and its own attached garage. Nearby, two craft rooms, one with a sink, provide space for both artists. The kitchen and living areas extend across the center of the home and out to the rear, with west-facing water views. A large deck spans the main living area over to the mother-in-law suite, with stairs down to a future greenhouse, pre-staged with power and water access.

The craft rooms were just one of the many unique custom details from the homeowners’ wish lists. The home office includes custom built-in desk with plenty of storage, French doors, and double flooring joists to prevent bounce and sag under the weight of the husband’s baby grand piano. Other details include a beautiful glass fireplace surround, a built-in cabinet above the fireplace to conceal the television, a toilet paper niche with space for an extra roll, heaters on three of the four outdoor decks, a custom kitchen shelving rack and double-strength drawers for storing wine and alcohol, and two separate refrigerators. A generator provides power backup in case of outages.

The Poulsbo property was previously home to a holly tree farm. Estes Builders preserved as much of the original holly trees as possible while still providing an ample layout for the homeowners’ vision. A circular drive, connecting to the two main garages as well as a detached RV garage, includes a retention pond for roof drainage to prevent stormwater runoff down the property’s slope.

Along with managing water, the home had a few additional logistical challenges, including a fire suppression system required based on the home’s size and a more complex permitting process due to the amount of roof and driveway area.
