Don’t just ask for a list.
If you simply ask for some references, you’re going to get the hand picked, most delighted customers. Even builders that do a relatively poor job get lucky every once in a while and end up with a happy customer or two. They are the ones on the reference list.
Ask for current references.
To avoid getting the hand selected reference list, ask for a customer or two that have had their home completed within the last six months. If the builder is reluctant to provide this, there are two likely scenarios. One is the builder has not completed a home within the last six months. The second is the builder has not had a satified customer in the last six months. Both are bad.
If a builder cannot provide you with at least one reference that has had their home completed within six months, move on. Almost all professional builders can and will provide a current reference without hesitation.
