When the Hemenways came to us last year to build a custom home in Hansville, WA they had decided, like many of our customers, to leave the noise and the crowds and the traffic of the city behind and retire somewhere more quiet. So when they found a lot situated just a stone’s throw from the water’s edge, they knew they had found the perfect place to build their dream home. The Hemenways envisioned a spacious but cozy home for their secluded waterfront setting. They wanted a fireplace with stone surround for chilly Northwest evenings, a large covered porch for leisurely mornings with a cup of coffee looking out over the water, and a two-story vaulted ceiling with large windows in the living and dining room to bring in lots of natural light (even on the cloudiest days). They had purchased the land and envisioned their home, but there were a few challenges to overcome to bring their dream home to life. First, the lot had tight setbacks from the bluff and property lines which meant that the larger home they wanted had to be designed to accommodate a narrow footprint. Next, the lot had a pre-existing drainage system and an off-site drainage location which presented issues that had to be resolved before construction could begin. We worked with the Hemenways to design and build a 2,048 square foot home with three bedrooms, two baths, and all of the items on their wish list. Now they can leave the hustle and bustle of city living and trade in their morning commute for a morning of fishing or kayaking just outside their front door.
